Circa 1992.
Before I ever got the opportunity to set eyes on a hard drive-based edit system, I was cutting on 3/4" Umatic decks. And, even then, they were antiques.
My alma mater, Glendale High School (still not in the 21st century, as noted by their website) had been handed a few bits of gear by the local public access station. They were upgrading to S-VHS and had been phasing out all the old 3/4" equipment. Suddenly, there was a new elective at GHS: Video Production.
I'm not sure if she wanted it, but Jackie Romey - then the school journalism teacher and newspaper advisor- was given this class of misfit students. We were Parker Lewis, The Outsiders and a little Revenge of the Nerds thrown in for good measure.
I don't think many people knew what to do with the video department. District, faculty and even students. Most days Mrs. Romey had the unfortunate job of herding housecats and trying to get us to think of inventive things to do with all this gear.
Senior year came around and I wanted to do something cool...so, I came up with this: Right Now.
...apologies to Van Hagar...
